What

Our Integrated HR-Payroll System, formerly known as BEACON, is being modified to allow for multi-factor authentication (MFA). This work will change how we log in to BEACON. The modifications will proceed in stages, but there is a short window in the first stage to transition to the new way of logging in.

When

  • Between November 1 and November 8, all NCSSM staff need to test their ability to log in using the new method

  • NCSSM email credentials are used to access the new BEACON login portal

  • Starting November 8, the only way to log in to BEACON will be using the new portal

  • In the first quarter of calendar 2022, we’ll be transitioned to MFA. We don’t yet know whether it will be mandatory. But, we highly encourage its use.

Details and instructions for testing

BEACON is being modified to allow for multi-factor authentication (MFA). Doing so will increase security for your data and make unauthorized changes to your HR and payroll information much more difficult.

Before November 8, you should verify that you are able to log in to BEACON using the new method. Otherwise, you run the risk of being locked out of BEACON starting on November 8.

This change will affect the way you log in to BEACON and will proceed in several steps:

  • You are now able to log in to BEACON using either the old or new methods. To log into BEACON using the new method before November 8:

    • Visit https://mybeacon.its.state.nc.us/irj/portal , either directly or via My NCSSM; you will see this screen:

    • Click on the highlighted link labelled “Microsoft Login Preview”
Note: the link name has changed since these instructions were originally sent out, but the new link acts the same as the old link

    • You will be taken to a Microsoft login page:

    • Enter your NCSSM email address on the line under “Sign in and click Next

    • You will be taken to the Microsoft password entry page:

    • Enter your NCSSM email password and click Sign In

    • The next page allows you to control how often you must go through the login process:

(Please note that if you have made this selection on a Microsoft sign-in page before, you may not receive this prompt again.) Make your desired selections, clicking either Yes or No as the last step

    • You may also get another page, with a one-time alert you that you’re signing in to a non-Microsoft application:

Accept the request to share information

    • You will now be on the BEACON landing page

  • Starting on November 8, you will be taken directly to the Microsoft login page, so you need to use the new method to log into BEACON from this point on. Please test your ability to log in using the new method beforehand and contact ITS if you have any difficulties or questions.

    • Note that MFA will not be implemented at this point

  • At some point in January-March 2022, MFA will be implemented on your BEACON login. Details on this transition and training programs will be forthcoming.
