Perusall
What is Perusall?
Perusall is an innovative educational tool designed to enhance the learning experience through collaborative reading and engagement. Perusall allows students to read and annotate texts digitally in a shared environment. As students highlight key passages, ask questions, and engage in discussions directly within the text, they actively participate in a communal learning process. This not only encourages critical thinking and better understanding of the material but also enables teachers to monitor engagement and comprehension in real-time.
Using Perusall in Canvas Courses
NCSSM has already integrated Perusall with our Canvas account.
You must add the Perusall link to each Canvas course any time you wish to use Perusall. Add it by navigating in your Canvas course to Settings > Navigation, and then clicking three dots to the right of “Perusall 1.3”, and selecting Enable (be sure to save your work).

How do I transition earlier Perusall 1.1 courses to the new Perusall 1.3?
We upgraded to Perusall 1.3 on Jan. 30, 2024.
If you used Perusall with Canvas courses prior to this date, your LTI 1.1 course content (excluding all student data/work) must be copied to a 1.3 course. This process is relatively simple.
You will create a new Perusall course by clicking the “Perusall 1.3” link you added to your course navigation menu. This will then create a new 1.3 course. You will then copy the previous 1.1 course content into the new 1.3 course. For a step-by-step guide, see How do I transition my Perusall course from an LTI 1.1 integration to LTI 1.3?
