Panopto Self-help Portal
Panopto is an all-in-one online video platform that gives users the flexibility to record, host, and livestream video. Within this tool users can also share and search videos.
Copyright and Film Streaming on Panopto
Uploading full films from DVDs or other copyrighted sources to Panopto—even when access is limited to your class or available only through Canvas—is not permitted under U.S. copyright law. When you copy or “rip” a DVD and upload it online, it creates a new digital version of the film, which constitutes an unauthorized reproduction and distribution of copyrighted material.
However, there are several fully legal ways to share films with students:
Show the film in class during an in-person meeting. This is allowed under the Classroom Use Exemption (Section 110(1) of the Copyright Act).
Place the film on reserve through the library, allowing students to view it individually in a controlled setting.
Use a licensed streaming service. NCSSM currently maintains a license to Swank, which provides access to many educational and feature films for classroom use.
Using these options ensures that we respect copyright law while still offering students meaningful and lawful access to film materials.
