Teaching with Canvas Video Guides

The following videos explain the basic features in Canvas you will use as a teacher at NCSSM.

Modules

Modules are the building blocks of Canvas. They allow students an easy way to navigate your course and find the information and assignments they need.

Pages

Pages are what you will use to create the majority of content in Canvas for your students to read. This video shows how to create pages, insert images, tables, and videos onto a page, as well as how to use headers to organize your page.

Assignments

When creating assignments, be sure to include the learning objectives, clear instructions on what the students are to do and what they are expected to turn in, as well as clear expectations for grading.

Discussions

Discussions can be an effective way to build community in your online classes. They allow you to have deep and meaningful conversations asynchronously.

SpeedGrader

Speedgrader is Canvas' built-in grading tool. It allows you to leave comments on students' work and annotate directly on their files. Leaving constructive comments on students' work is extremely important to student success.

Gradebook

It’s important to use the Canvas gradebook effectively to provide grading transparency to your students.

Syllabus

Canvas has a dedicated space for your syllabus, which allows students to always have easy access to the important information your syllabus contains.

Rubrics

Rubrics not only provide clear grading expectations for your students, but they can save you lots of time when grading.
