This guide explains several methods you can use to record your computer screen. This is useful for tech demonstrations, training videos, recorded lectures, or presentations.

There are several methods we recommend:

Simple Screen Recording with Loom

For simple recordings of your screen that will not require editing, we recommend using Loom. This is a free service for education, and allows you to simply record your screen and share the link to the recording with students. There is no need to upload any videos to Panopto when using Loom.

Loom is also available to students to use if they need to record their screen for a brief presentation.

Advanced Recording with Camtasia

Camtasia is software for screen recording that has more functionality than Loom. Camtasia allows you to record your screen, edit the recording, highlight areas you wish students to focus on, and even zoom in and out of the screen. Camtasia software is available only to teachers and staff, so we do not recommend it for student use.

More information about Camtasia

After creating videos with Camtasia, we recommend uploading them to Panopto using the standard method for uploading videos or the export to Panopto feature in Camtasia (this will add the uploaded video to your “My Folder” folder in Panopto, where you can edit the share permissions and copy the link to share with students.

Using Panopto to Record Your Screen

Panopto also has built-in tools to record your screen. While we generally recommend Loom and Camtasia for most uses, some people prefer using Panopto’s tools due to its tight integration with Panopto.

Panopto Capture - this is a web-based capture tool that requires no installation of software

Panopto Record for Windows - desktop application for Windows with more features than Panopto Capture

Panopto Record for Mac - desktop application for Mac, with more features than Panopto Capture
