This guide explains how to use the Wacom One Display Tablet.

Instructions to connect the tablet

The following website has a short video that explains how to connect the tablet to your laptop. It also has software you must download and install in order for the tablet to function properly. Be sure to install the correct software drivers.

When connecting the tablet, pay special attention to which cables go where, and what direction the cables should be facing.

  1. HDMI cable plugs into the laptop’s HDMI port (if your computer dopes not have an HDMI port, contact TLC to get an adapter).

  2. The standard-size USB plug also plugs into the computer (you may need an adapter if your computer does not have USB 2 or USB 3 ports).

  3. The larger-sized USB plug connects to the wall adapter

  4. The power plug attaches to the tablet, with the cord facing to the left edge of the tablet

  5. The power button is in the upper right-hand corner of the tablet.

 

Using the Wacom One tablet

After connecting the tablet to your laptop, it will act as a second monitor that you can write on.

We recommend setting your Zoom settings so Zoom uses dual monitors when in meetings. This will allow you to always see your students large on one display, while sharing your screen and writing on the tablet.

When possible, we recommend using a second external display, in addition to the tablet. This allows you to view your students large on one display, have the Internet or other applications open on a second external display, and share the tablet only when you wish to annotate on the screen.

In this example, the students will appear on the laptop screen, the Internet is open on the large external monitor, and the whiteboard is being shared and annotated on with the Wacom One tablet.

 

Connecting an additional external monitor requires 2 HDMI ports (one for the tablet, one for the external monitor) and will require an adapter. Contact TLC if you need assistance finding the correct adapter for your laptop.

Note: M1 and M2 Macbook Airs and Macbook Pros require special adapters and downloading additional software to support 2 external displays, as they do not natively support multiple external displays. This OWC adapter is one option for using 2 external displays with a newer Macbook. (Be sure to download and install the DisplayLink drivers they recommend).

Tips to Using the Wacom One

The main thing is to practice. If you are used to using an iPad, the Wacom tablet display is going to feel a bit more awkward, since you cannot swipe with your fingers or hands.

Treat the Wacom One just like you would an external display. Once you connect it to your laptop, be sure your laptop is set so that it is not mirroring the same screen on the Wacom as your main display. You need to use it as an expansion to your desktop.

For most uses, you will use the Wacom One with Zoom and use Zoom’s built-in annotation features.
