Accessing Canvas Courses with limited Internet Access

In the event of an internet outage caused by a disaster, NCSSM has put in place a few tools that can help you stay on track with your coursework. Please remember though that ultimately your safety and well-being are more important than schoolwork. Your teachers will exercise flexibility with due dates and assignments. Please reach out and communicate any struggles you are experiencing with your teachers or NCSSM counseling.

This guide will show you how to download course materials from Canvas so that you can access them offline whenever needed.

Download Canvas Course to your Computer

When viewing the modules in a Canvas course, you should see a Export Course Content button near the top of the page. Clicking this button will zip up all published content in the course into one downloadable file. This file, when unzipped contains an HTML version of the Canvas course.

Important Information about Viewing Offline Courses

Keep in mind, many NCSSM Canvas courses include external web-links, embedded videos, embedded slides, etc., that will not function without an Internet connection. However, teachers will do their best to include files such as pdfs in the course that will be viewable offline.

You also will not be able to submit any assignments without Internet. We recommend you complete as much as you can on paper and submit scans of the work you’ve completed whenever you do have a connection.

Viewing Class Recordings

It may not be possible for you to view class recordings with limited internet. We have asked your teachers to share pdf versions of any slides they share during lectures in Canvas along with summaries of the class (these may be AI-generated). These will be accessible in your Canvas courses in offline mode.

If you do not have Internet, your teacher may also opt to mail you a USB drive with class recordings and any other materials you may need to complete class work.

Please know that your teachers are here for you and will be flexible with any schoolwork.Your mental and physical well-being is always the priority. Focus on taking care of yourself and your loved ones. Reach out whenever you’re able, and we’ll work together when the time is right to ensure you can complete any necessary steps to complete your classes.
