Share a Panopto video with others
This guide will explain how to set sharing permissions on Panopto videos so they can be viewed by NCSSM students or even people external to NCSSM.
Share Panopto Videos
While hovering over a video with your curser, choose the "share" option. You can then decide who the file should be shared with.
If you need to share the video widely with many people at NCSSM, we recommend setting the share permission so that "Anyone at your organization with the link" can view. You can then copy the URL and share it with anyone at NCSSM. This also allows any NCSSM student to view the file when embedded in a Canvas course, but keeps the file unavailable to people not affiliated with NCSSM.
Share a Panopto Folder
You can also set the sharing permissions for an entire folder so that all videos within the folder inherit the permissions.
For folders housing videos you intend to use year after year and embed in Canvas courses, we recommend setting the folder permissions so that “Anyone at the Organization with the Link” can view.
To edit folder sharing permissions:
Select the folder
Click the share icon in the folder settings
Sharing with your department or the entire school
If you intend to share videos with all NCSSM users, so they can search and find your video, change the sharing permissions so that “Anyone at your organization can find and view.” This will allow users to search for and find your video(s).
If you intend to share videos with your department, we recommend creating a folder for departmental shares. When creating this folder choose to create it at the top level (do not put it in the “My Folder”), and give it a name that distinguishes it from other folders and allows it to be found easily. Set the folder permissions so that “anyone at your organization and search for and find” the videos within the folder.
In addition, it is a good idea to add each member of your department as a viewer to the folder. To do this, type their email address in the “Add people and groups” space. (if they have an account in Panopto, they should show up as NCSSMCanvas/email@ncssm.edu).
If you want to allow another person to add videos to this folder as well, use the pull-down menu to change the person from a “viewer” to a “creator”.
This will allow them to upload videos to this folder as well.
Sharing with external users
Panopto makes it easy to share videos with people without NCSSM accounts.
Please be careful sharing videos with people external to NCSSM, as they can also share the videos with other users. You should never share class recordings with external users.
Instructions for sharing videos to external users via email invitation (best method if sharing with only a few external people).
If you have a video that needs to be shared with many parents or the general public, and it does not feature sensitive information, another option is to edit the sharing permissions on the video, setting it to Public (unlisted) Anyone who has the link. You can then share the URL to the video with others external to NCSSM.
